Organizations supporting Congressional Democrats' health care reform efforts will hold a rally Saturday to urge U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) to keep backing the plan.
The groups, members of the local chapter of Health Care for America Now, say they will deliver nearly 7,900 post cards and petitions to Moore's Milwaukee office from Milwaukee-area residents who want changes to the health care insurance system that include the choice of a public option.
The petitions were collected over the past year, said Robert Kraig, executive director of Citizen Action of Wisconsin. He said he expected 30 to 50 participants at Saturday's event.
Democrats are trying to regroup and salvage some kind of health care legislation after a Republican U.S. Senate victory in Massachusetts this week created more hurdles for the Democratic health care proposals. Opponents of the health care reform efforts say that government should avoid taking such a large a role in health care.
Moore has backed health care legislation that includes a government-run option. "We don't think Gwen Moore is going to waiver," Kraig said. "We just want to show that the wind is in her sails."
